Vehicle retail sales up 37 percent in April

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI) Vehicle dealers’ body Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Thursday said retail sales of vehicles in India have increased by 37 per cent. This increase is in comparison to the month of April last year when the country was battling the second wave of the Kovid epidemic.

FADA said a total of 16,27,975 vehicles were sold across categories in April as against 11,87,771 vehicles sold during the same period a year ago.

On a yearly basis, sales across all vehicle categories, including passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, have increased this year as compared to April last year.

Last month, 2,64,342 passenger vehicles were registered, up 25 per cent from 2,10,682 units in the same period a year ago.

Similarly, in April 2022, 11,94,520 two-wheelers were sold, which is 38 percent higher than the same period a year ago.

Last month, retail sales of commercial vehicles stood at 78,398 units, up 52 per cent from 51,515 units in April, 2021.

Sales of three wheelers grew by 96 per cent in April this year as compared to April 2021, while tractor registrations grew by 26 per cent.

FADA President Vinkesh Gulati said, “A comparison of April, 2019 and April, 2022 shows that we are not yet fully recovered as overall retail sales have declined by six per cent.”

He said the Russo-Ukraine war continues and China is also under lockdown due to which the auto industry is facing supply constraints, semiconductor shortage, high metal prices as well as container shortage.
