In the new report of the Ministry of Road Transport, it has been told that in the year 2020, there were a total of 1 lakh 20 thousand 806 fatal road accidents, most of which were hit by the youth. Two wheeler riders also took the maximum lives in accidents, which is 43.5% of the total deaths. The surprising thing is that 17.8 percent of the people who lost their lives in road accidents were pedestrians. Two wheelers were also at the fore in the case of accidents, followed by cars, jeeps and taxis. It has been told in the report that the cases of road accidents were reported more than the rural areas, which is about 68 percent.
This report named Road Accidents in India 2020 (Road accidents in India – 2020) states that out of total 1.20 lakh fatal accidents, 43 thousand 412 (35.9%) accidents happened on National Highways. 30 thousand 171 (25%) accidents took place on the state highways, while 47 thousand 223 accidents i.e. about 39.1 percent of the accidents took place on the rest of the roads. The good thing is that there has been a decrease of 12.23 percent in fatal road accidents in 2020 as compared to the year 2019.
According to the report, in 2020, a total of 3 lakh 66 thousand 138 road accidents were reported across the country. In these, 1 lakh 31 thousand 714 people died and 3 lakh 48 thousand 279 people were injured. According to the report, the total number of people killed in road accidents in 2020 is 12.6 percent less than in 2019. For the third year in a row, most young people were the victims of these accidents.
The report states that 69 per cent of the accident victims were in the age group of 18 to 45 years, while 87.4 per cent were in the working age group of 18-60 years. According to the report, 56,334 male and 1551 female drivers died in road accidents in the year 2020, while 35,552 male and 10,624 female passengers died.
It is also worth noting that 65 percent of the accidents took place on straight roads, while only 15.2 percent of accidents were reported on curved roads, potholed roads. The data shows that more than 72% of the accidents happened in clear weather. Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of road accidents on national highways, but Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of deaths. However, the states which recorded a decrease in road accidents and road accident deaths also include Uttar Pradesh, along with Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala.
