Tokayev orders mitigation of punishment for rioters in Kazakhstan

Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev has instructed to reduce the punishment for citizens who participated in the mass riots in early January, in the absence of aggravating circumstances. He wrote about this on his Twitter page.

“Persons who have committed serious crimes will be punished in accordance with the law. For other persons, I instruct the Prosecutor General’s Office to establish the degree of their guilt. In the absence of aggravating circumstances, take measures to mitigate the punishment,” Tokayev said.

The President of Kazakhstan added that approximately 2,000 people were detained during the riots.
