New Delhi: field marshal today KM Cariappa is the death anniversary. Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army after independence. He received the rank of Field Marshal, the highest honor in the Indian Army, in 1983. He died in 1993, 6 years after getting this title. Only two people have got the rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army. In 1973 this honor was given to General Sam Manekshaw.

Interesting anecdote of Cariappa’s patriotism
It was the year 1965. There was a war going on between India and Pakistan. Hunter aircraft of the Indian Air Force was shot down in Pakistani territory. Cariappa’s son Flight Lieutenant KC Nanda Cariappa was also on that plane who later became Air Marshal. He was taken prisoner of war by the Pakistani army. Since Ayyub Khan had worked under Cariappa, Ayub Khan was generous with his boss’s son. Ayyub Khan approached Cariappa and said that he would release his son soon. Cariappa did not express any happiness on this. He said, ‘Now he is not just my son. He is a child of this country. He is a soldier fighting to protect his motherland like a true patriot. Thank you for your generosity but I would say either release all the prisoners or none of them. Don’t do anything special with him.’
