Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed on sensitizing the stakeholders to collectively address the issues of road safety and said that it is a very serious issue and there should be zero tolerance for road accidents.

He said the officers have been asked to consider three things while taking action. This includes immediate solution to the problem, medium term solution and long term solution. He said that he is motivating all the field officers and project directors to take a pledge of zero accident.

India is one of the countries with the highest number of deaths in road accidents. According to a report by the Ministry of Transport, about 4.50 lakh road accidents take place in the country every year, in which 1.50 lakh people lose their lives. This figure is the highest in any other country in the world. Road accidents have been cited as the main reason for disability in India.

According to an estimate, 53 road accidents take place in the country every hour and one person dies in a road accident every four minutes. Most of the road accidents in India occur on National Highways (NHs). According to statistics, most of the deaths in road accidents are of two wheeler drivers.

Violation of traffic rules is the main reason for road accidents. According to the data of the Ministry of Transport, cases like driving on the wrong side, overspeeding, traffic light jumping, underage driving, drunk driving have come to the fore as a major reason for accidents in road accidents.

Nitin Gadkari has formulated a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on vehicle education, engineering, law and emergency care. Under this, the Ministry has notified ‘Parliament Road Safety Committee Member’ in each district of India to promote awareness among the people under the chairmanship of the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) of the district. The amended Motor Vehicles Act (2019) was implemented on August 9, 2019 in the country to improve road safety and traffic rules.
