The Pentagon is considering the use of SpaceX Starship spacecraft for the transfer of troops and military cargo – News

The US Department of Defense is considering using Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship rockets to deploy rapid reaction forces to the site of a sudden escalation – for example, as was the case with the attack on the US embassy in 2012 in Benghazi. The Intercept writes about this, citing Pentagon documents.

Reportedly, in a 2021 “interim report” the US Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), the Pentagon’s cargo delivery arm to support the global US presence, outlined three possible uses for SpaceX spacecraft for military purposes in the future.

The first takes into account American concerns about “Chinese hegemony.” The report states that “space transportation will provide an alternative method of logistical delivery” in the Pacific Ocean. The second involves the use of Starship as, in fact, a mobile air force base, which will include “a set of shelters, vehicles, construction equipment and other equipment that can be pre-positioned around the world and moved to any location that the US Air Force needs for air operations”.

Starship and without any landing inside look menacing

The third option looks even more interesting. It is called “Embassy Support” and implies “possibility of fast delivery from the USA [сил быстрого реагирования] straight to the theater of operations”. An example is the attack on the American embassy in 2012 in Benghazi. Then the US military department was criticized for reacting too late to events.

The paper notes that the ability to simply “demonstrate” the use of the SpaceX Starship “can deter non-state actors from acting aggressively against the United States”.

It is not yet possible to say whether SpaceX Starship spacecraft will serve the Pentagon, but it should be noted that SpaceX is already a Pentagon contractor – Elon Musk’s company is actively launching satellites into orbit in the interests of the US military department and its allies.
