No one better than me and Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s denial
Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi has refused to be the opposition’s presidential candidate in the presidential election. A statement was issued on his behalf saying that he is grateful for the name offer on behalf of the united opposition. Consider some other name who could be a better president than me. Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was approached amid the opposition’s exercise to field a joint candidate for the presidential election. Gopalkrishna Gandhi was the joint opposition candidate for the post of Vice President in 2017. However, he lost to M Venkaiah Naidu in the election. Leaders of opposition parties spoke to Gandhi over phone and urged him to consider his request to contest the election as joint candidate of the opposition for the presidency. He had asked for some time to reply on this and now on Monday he refused.
2 days ago..Farooq Abdullah said this thing
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has withdrawn his name as a possible presidential candidate. He said that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through a turning point and he wants to remain in active politics for now. He expressed his gratitude to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for proposing his name. Farooq Abdullah issued a statement saying, “I withdraw my consideration of my name as a possible joint opposition candidate for the post of President of India.” I believe that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through a turning point and it is more important for me to help the people there in these uncertain times.
Sharad Pawar did not agree
In the meeting of the opposition parties regarding the Presidential election, all the leaders requested NCP Chief Sharad Pawar to become the Presidential candidate. But he turned down this offer. Sharad Pawar was requested even before this meeting but even then he refused. When the meeting was held again in Delhi, he politely declined the offer during the meeting. Sharad Pawar said that I am not the presidential candidate from the opposition side. He also said this in the NCP meeting. The Congress had also expressed its support for Sharad Pawar’s presidential candidacy. In the meeting, leaders of DMK, RJD, TMC and many parties requested him but he did not agree.
When the name of Deve Gowda came
Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s name also surfaced amid the discussion about who would be the candidate from the opposition. To this question, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy said that his father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda will not contest for the post of President. Kumaraswamy said the sole aim of JD(S) patriarch Deve Gowda was to see the party form the government on its own in Karnataka. Responding to a question, Kumaraswamy said a few days ago Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal Chief Minister) invited me and our party’s national president (Deve Gowda) to attend the meeting (meeting of opposition parties on presidential candidate). Did… we had attended that meeting.
Why refrain from becoming a candidate
Contesting the presidential election is an honor for any leader and also an important achievement in his political career. Despite this, the potential candidates one after the other from the opposition are pulling back instead of taking steps forward. Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, Deve Gowda, all these leaders are old players of politics. Being an opposition candidate according to the numbers game is not going to give him any advantage. The chances of victory are slim but the bigger question is about opposition unity. There is no unity in the opposition, so the leaders are shying away from taking the risk. The biggest question still remains as to who will lead the opposition. Kejriwal and KCR have already avoided the meeting called by Mamta Banerjee. In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, this leader is seeing a different role for himself and his party. At the same time, on the claim of Mamta Banerjee, it has been said many times before from the Congress that without her it is not possible to imagine the opposition. The presidential election is a test of opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The questions which were there earlier are still there and Shiv Sena is also pointing the same.
Shiv Sena faced bitter question
On behalf of Shiv Sena, it has been said that if the opposition cannot put up a strong candidate for the presidential election, then how can it give a capable prime minister in 2024, this question will come in the mind of the people. In its mouthpiece Saamana, the party said that if the work to find an answer to this question had been done six months ago, it would have exposed the seriousness of the opposition towards this election. Shiv Sena questioned that people can ask that if the opposition cannot field a strong candidate for the presidential election, then how will it be able to give a capable prime minister.
Will there be any decision tomorrow?
There is a meeting of the opposition parties tomorrow to discuss the name of the candidate for the presidential election. In this meeting, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not participate in the meeting. In place of Mamata Banerjee, her nephew and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee may represent the party in the meeting. TMC Rajya Sabha whip Sukhendu Shekhar Ray said that Mamata Banerjee had made it clear in the June 15 meeting that the next meeting would be held by Sharad Pawar. The meeting was pre-scheduled and it was believed that Gopalkrishna Gandhi would agree. But what is decided in tomorrow’s meeting after his refusal a day before the meeting will remain the big question.
