Morth: Concerns have been raised about the safety of passengers in vehicles sold in India. Every year lakhs of people die in road accidents in the country. The government has taken several steps to address the concerns of minimizing the loss of lives and property in the event of road accidents.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (Morth) Nitin Gadkari said that now in India at least six airbags will be required for a car with a capacity of eight people. The government has approved the draft GSR notification to make it mandatory. According to this, it has been made necessary to provide four additional airbags in M1 category vehicles to reduce the impact of collision from front and rear for the people sitting in both the front and rear compartments.
airbag rules in india
The Ministry of Road Transport has made it mandatory for the fitment of driver airbags with effect from July 1, 2019, and for the front passenger to be seated next to the driver with effect from January 1, 2022. It has now been made mandatory for most passengers to have airbags in cars sold after October 1, 2022. Gadkari said, “This rule of installing maximum airbags will ensure the safety of passengers in all segments of the car, irrespective of the price/variant of the vehicle.”
Benefits of airbags in the car
Airbags are an important safety feature in a car. It can be found in many parts of the car. Car airbag ABS act as a safety cover during road accidents. Many times in road accidents, due to the sudden stop of a speeding vehicle, there is injury to the head or other delicate part of the passenger sitting in it, due to which many people die. If the airbag is opened for each passenger in the car during a road accident, the air bag actually fills the gap between the body of the car and the passenger in it, protecting the passenger from a direct collision. Because of this, the damage caused in an accident can be greatly reduced.
Airbags can be installed in any part of the car
There are many different types of airbags these days and they can be installed in any part of the car. These airbags can be installed in the steering wheel, doors, dashboard, roof etc. of the car. As per the new directive of the government, M1 category vehicles will be fitted with two side/side torso airbags and two side curtain/tube airbags which will cover all the passengers of the car. This is an important step in making motor vehicles in India safer than ever before.
meeting of government officials
Officials of the Ministry of Road Transport also met air bag manufacturers to discuss the convenience of air bags in motor vehicles. At present, the rule of 2 air bags in a passenger car is mandatory in India. In November 2021, a meeting was held regarding the safety features in the mid-range car segment, after which the government has taken this decision. The Indian government wants that not only expensive but also mid-range cars must have safety features like air bags.
