MOFA thanks President Biden for Taiwan’s Summit for Democracy invitation – Taiwan Today

Taiwan’s invitation to participate in the Summit for Democracy issued by U.S. President Joe Biden is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 24.

The virtual event, taking place Dec. 9 to 10, brings together leaders of government, civil society and the private sector from 100-plus countries and territories. Discussions will span issues such as resisting authoritarianism, fighting corruption and promoting human rights.

Taiwan is to be represented by Hsiao Bi-khim, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., and Audrey Tang, minister without portfolio. They will demonstrate the country’s determination to defend democracy while sharing experiences in strengthening governance via digital technology.

According to the MOFA, the invitation is recognition of Taiwan’s long-standing efforts in promoting freedom, democracy and human rights. This is evidenced by relevant workshops staged under the Taiwan-U.S. Global Cooperation and Training Framework since 2015, a national human rights action plan launched last year, and the third U.S.-Taiwan Consultations on Democratic Governance in the Indo-Pacific Region last week, the ministry said.

Taiwan is a front-line state standing firm in the face of rising authoritarianism, the MOFA said. As a force for good in the world, the country is committed to working with like-minded partners and civic groups from home and abroad in related areas of mutual concern, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Many thanks to @POTUS for inviting #Taiwan to attend the Summit for Democracy. @TECRO_USA Rep. @bikhim & Digital Minister @audreyt will fly the flag for the country & its 23.5 million people at the #US’ inaugural gathering of global forces for good. We’re #StrongerTogether!” (YCH-E)
