Sports ministry approves additional financial aid for Olympic medallist wrestler Bajrang

The Mission Olympic Unit (MOC) of the Sports Ministry has approved additional financial assistance of Rs 1.76 lakh to Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia for training abroad. Bajrang was sanctioned Rs 7.53 lakh for a 26-day camp in Moscow ahead of the busy season. He has been sanctioned an additional amount of Rs 1.76 lakh for the existing camp which started from December 27.

Jitender went as his ‘sparring’ partner and Anand Kumar as the physiotherapist. Bajrang is set to participate in international tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, besides the UWW ranking tournament. According to a statement issued by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Bajrang said, “I have to participate in the Ranking Series tournament in Italy and Turkey in February, then the Asian Championship in Mongolia in April. I will give my best because my goal is Paris is about to change the color of its medals in 2024.”

Greco-Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar has been sanctioned Rs 10.85 lakh for special training with ‘sparring’ partner and coach in Romania and Hungary. Sunil is part of the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) development group. He has won gold medals in Senior National Championship in 2019 and 2020, Asian Championship 2020 and Senior National Championship in 2021. Apart from these, Judoka Yash Ghangas was also included in TOPS Development Group.
