Kanpur News: After 38 years in Kanpur, 4 accused of Sikh riots have been arrested… know what is the whole matter

Kanpur: The arrest of the accused took place 38 years after the Sikh riots in Kanpur. Four accused have been arrested in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. 127 people were killed in these riots. SIT DIG Balendu Bhushan Singh said that the accused were arrested and sent to jail on Wednesday. During interrogation, statements of each of the accused were made in front of the magistrate. After the order of the Supreme Court, in February-2019, the Uttar Pradesh government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

In most of the cases in the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Kanpur 38 years ago, the final report was put in the court. Due to the activism of some Sikh organizations, the matter went to the Supreme Court, from where the SIT was ordered for investigation. Initially, the SIT was given a tenure of 6 months, which was extended later. The SIT was given the status of a police station.

20 cases, 74 accused alive
SIT officials had told that documents were found in police stations, courts and in Delhi, apart from the Ministry of Home Affairs, from some victims. After taking orders from the court, the investigation started again. Inquiries were conducted in Delhi, Punjab, Jabalpur and many other cities. The police had identified 74 alive accused. The statements of every witness were also recorded before the magistrate.

The accused had come to kill sitting in the truck
According to DIG Balendu, the arrested accused Safiullah (65), Yogendra Singh (65), Vijay Narayan Singh (62) and Abdul Rehman (65) along with their other accomplices had come in a truck to Ghatampur. On November 1, 1984, at 3 pm, a mob along with the accused set a house on fire in Nirala Nagar. In this, three people were burnt alive in Nirala Nagar, while one was killed by being thrown down from the roof.

Virendra Singh had written the report of the death of only two people at Kidwai Nagar police station. According to the report, the army and police had arrived at that time. On these arrests Sardar Mokam Singh, former head of Gurdwara Bhai Banna Saheb of Kanpur, said that the struggle has paid off. We welcome arrests. This is the victory of the Constitution. We want that now all the guilty should be punished, not compensation.
