January 16 will be celebrated as National Startup Day: PM Modi


New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) Describing the country’s startup units as the “Aadhaar-pillar” of New India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the government has decided to observe January 16 as National Startup Day.

Addressing the startup businessmen of different sectors in a virtual manner, the Prime Minister said, “In order to reach this culture of startups to the far flung areas of the country, it has now been decided to celebrate January 16 as National Startup Day. ”

“I assure you that all your suggestions, ideas and innovations will get full support from the government,” Modi said.

He said that startups will become the pillars of New India and the country will move forward with the mantra of ‘Innovate for India’ and ‘Innovate from India’.

The Prime Minister said, “While four thousand patents were approved in the year 2013-14, last year their number increased to more than 28 thousand.” He said that today there are more than 60,000 start-up units in the country. Of these, 42 are unicorns (valued at over $1 billion).

“Investment in research and development for future technologies is the priority of the government,” Modi said.
