New Delhi : A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Center to explore the possibility of enacting a stricter population control law to secure the fundamental rights of citizens. The petition, filed by spiritual speaker Devkinandan Thakur, said population explosion needs to be controlled to secure the basic rights of citizens, as it is the root cause of all problems.

The petition, filed through advocate Ashutosh Dubey, said, “The dangers of population explosion and its effects on the economy are often discussed, but the impact of repeated childbirth on women is rarely highlighted outside homes.” .’ The petition states that the right to clean air, drinking water, health and livelihood under Article 21-21A cannot be ensured to all citizens without effective population control.

Demand to investigate the laws of developed countries
The petition has also sought a direction to the Law Commission of India to examine the population control laws and population control policies of developed countries and suggest measures to protect the fundamental rights. In another petition, the Center had earlier told the apex court that India was against forcing its citizens into family planning.

Pressure will lead to demographic distortions
According to the Centre, any pressure to produce a certain number of children would be regressive and lead to demographic distortions. In an affidavit filed in the top court, the health ministry had said that the family welfare program in the country is voluntary in nature, which enables couples to decide their family size at their will and adopt family planning methods accordingly. .
