The Congress on Thursday hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a magistrate’s court convicted Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani for taking out a protest march without police permission, calling it “arrogant rulers”. One must know, “We will neither bow down nor be afraid.” Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala criticized Mevani’s conviction and sentence of 3 months, asking whether to raise the issues of Dalits in Gujarat and India, fight for their rights, their illegally occupied land. For, marching for justice has become a crime.
Surjewala asked, “Is it a crime to demand that the lands of Dalits which have been illegally occupied for decades by some people be returned to them. It seems that it has become a crime in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji’s Gujarat, because it cannot be a crime in Bapu’s (Mahatma Gandhi) Gujarat. This cannot be a crime in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Gujarat. Gujarat is the land of justice and on that land of justice Jignesh Mevani is being sent to jail because he took out a march against the occupation of the land of Dalits.
He said, ‘The proud rulers should know, we will not bow down or be afraid. If it is a crime to be the voice of Dalits and demand justice for them, then we all along with Jignesh Mevani will commit this crime again and again.
