The main opposition Congress also claimed that the Narendra Modi government has increased the price of subsidized LPG cylinders by Rs 585 in the last eight years and also completely abolished the subsidy.
Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said in a Facebook post, “During the UPA government, the price of LPG cylinder was Rs 414. A subsidy of Rs 827 was given on every cylinder. Today the price of cylinder is Rs 999. The amount of subsidy is zero. Modi government has removed all those security covers which were arranged by Congress for the protection of common man.
He said, “Today crores of households are facing difficulties due to inflation, unemployment and poor governance. Congress party will never allow this to happen. We have always helped families in need and always will.”
Party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted, “BJP is rich, people are helpless. The price of subsidized LPG cylinder has increased two and a half times under the BJP rule. LPG is now out of reach of the middle class and poor class.
According to him, the price of subsidized gas cylinder in Delhi in May 2014 was Rs 414, which has now become Rs 999.50, that is, an increase of more than Rs 585.
Surjewala urged the government to bring down the price of subsidized cooking gas to the level of 2014.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda took a dig at the government over inflation by garlanding gas cylinders and lighting incense sticks in front of vegetables at the party headquarters. He said that it was a ‘tribute meeting of the cylinders’.
Kheda told reporters, “Sahab (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) increased the price of a gas cylinder by Rs 50 as soon as he came back from a foreign tour. Once Modi ji had put up huge hoardings and said that surrender the subsidy. Seeing this condition today, it seems that the cylinder itself should be surrendered.
He claimed that the Congress-led UPA government had given a subsidy of Rs 46,458 crore on LPG in 2013-14, but the Modi government reduced the subsidy to Rs 18 crore in 2015-16 and reduced it to zero in 2016-17. gave.
Kheda said, “It is clear from these figures that 23 crore people who were raised above the poverty line by the UPA government, 23 crore people again went below poverty line and in this 14 crore people increased. In such a situation, the government should have a big heart, but this government does not have a heart.
He said that this government increased the price of commercial cylinders by Rs 102 last month. He alleged that this government is hurting the people in every way.
Kheda said, “Our demand is to give some relief to the country. Take back the increase. Bring it down to the level of 2014 price. The country is begging for relief.
Meanwhile, several leaders and workers of the Indian Youth Congress demonstrated near the residence of Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri on Saturday against the hike in the price of domestic cooking gas.
