New Delhi: Assassination of former Punjab CM Beant Singh (
Beant Singh Murder Caseserving sentence in the case of
Balwant Singh Rajoana (Balwant Singh Rajoana) The Supreme Court has asked the Center to take a decision within two months. The apex court has taken a serious note of the fact that the petition is pending before the President since March 24, 2013. The court had asked the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHFW) to submit the report by April 30.
The Home Ministry affidavit said that the mercy petition cannot be entertained as it has been filed by the organisation. No mercy petition has been filed on behalf of the convict. Along with this, the application of other convicts is still pending in the Supreme Court. Rajoana is accused of killing former Punjab CM Beant Singh and sentenced to death. Beant Singh was assassinated in 1995. Rajoana, who was sentenced to death in this case, has requested for his sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment on the basis of serving 26 years in jail.
A bench headed by Justice UU Lalit of the Supreme Court said that pending applications of other convicts in the Supreme Court will not come in the way of taking a decision on Rajoana’s petition. The Supreme Court is hearing Rajoana’s petition.
