Assam government will buy traditional handloom items that could not be sold by weavers

Guwahati, Jan 13 (PTI) The Assam government will procure unsold traditional handloom items to help weavers overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19. This was said in an official statement.

It said that this procurement will be done under the ‘Swanirbhar Nari’ scheme and in the first phase about 1.23 lakh weavers will be covered under it.

The decision was taken on Wednesday after the state cabinet approved the handloom policy to provide market access and online marketing support for export of weavers’ products.

“In the first phase, about 1.23 lakh weavers holding yarn passbooks will be covered under the scheme,” the statement said.

Yarn passbook is a document through which raw material is supplied to handloom weavers.
